EQUINE SWIMMING POOL

Our 70ft x 31ft oval shaped equine swimming pool offers area horsemen an important conditioning and rehabilitation tool. An ideal way to increase a horse’s cardiovascular condition or to keep an injured performer fit during rehab, swimming provides a vigorous, low-impact workout.

The additional cardiovascular exertion swimming requires – due to the hydrodynamic pressure placed on the rib cage and lungs while the horse is in the water – is the source of swimming’s cardiovascular benefits.
The resistance of the water enables muscular development while also encouraging flexibility.

Swimming a horse provides good cardiovascular exercise without concussion on the limbs; in particular, swimming horses is a good way to keep those with soft tissue injuries fit without straining an injured leg.

The benefits horses gain from swim therapy goes beyond the physical. Animals relegated to stall rest or hand-walking rapidly become bored and swimming is a great way to vary their routines and help them release pent up energy.

Safety

A long, gradual 45ft long entry ramp equipped with slip resistant mats offers secure footing and enables the horse to become gradually acclimated to the water. A terraced entry/exit point ensures that horses will be able to easily enter and exit the pool. Patient and skilled handlers treat each horse as an individual, developing the animal’s confidence with each swim.

The pool’s powerful filtration system runs continually, providing a clean swimming environment for your horse. Chlorine levels are similar to a human pool and wash racks in the pool area are used pre-swim to keep the animals and the facility pristine.

Can my horse swim?

Horses are natural swimmers, but need to get used to the experience. Our patient handlers help uncertain horses build confidence and enjoy swimming. Each horse has a different swimming “style” and by treating them as individuals, staff can accommodate them all.

Swimming offers your horse an enjoyable form of exercise that adds variety to the work routine. Because swimming improves cardiovascular and muscular fitness, horses are better able to deal with the rigors of training and less likely to become injured.

The HBPA has hired a licensed CPO (Certified Pool Operator). He monitors, regulates, and is responsible for the water quality of the pool. Handlers are experienced horsemen that ensure your horse has the best experience possible.
