Joint MNHBPA/MTA/Canterbury Efforts

Officials of Canterbury Park, the Minnesota Thoroughbred Association and the Minnesota Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, which represents owners and trainers at the Shakopee, Minnesota racetrack, have united to develop a comprehensive approach to encourage Thoroughbred horse ownership, both during and after a racing career. This first-of-its-kind industry initiative addresses two problems that face horse racing nationally: a shrinking base of Thoroughbred owners and the aftercare of Thoroughbreds once their racing days have concluded.

From this partnership of the MNHBPA, MTA and Canterbury, the Minnesota Racehorse Engagement Project (MNREP) was born. Under the direction of Executive Director Joe Scurto, a racing and marketing leader, the Project in its short four-year history has brought numerous owners to our sport. Scurto facilitates ownerships of all sizes, from the smallest stables to ones looking to invest internationally.

As important as it is to get new owners, it is equally important to have robust programs of aftercare for our retired Thoroughbreds. To this end, Scurto and the MNREP have worked tirelessly with all of Minnesota racing’s stakeholders. Through Doctor Richard Bowman’s Second Chance Adoption and the This Old Horse organization, dozens of retiring racehorses have been placed in safe and secure settings, many which go on to second careers.

A New Era at Canterbury

In just a few years, the Canterbury Development Project has added scores of homes, company headquarters and dining options. But the best is yet to come, as almost 40 acres of land was sold to developers who are building a 19,000-seat arena, attracting A-List stars. It will be the cornerstone of a new entertainment district which will feature horse racing, restaurants, and clubs. Completion date is expected to be June 2025.

What makes this so special is that the overall development will be horse-themed as hundreds of thousands of people who have never been to Canterbury make their way to this Shakopee destination.

This first-of-its-kind industry initiative addresses a problem that faces horse racing nationally: a shrinking base of thoroughbred owners.

“We have been at the forefront of innovation and we have long supported thoroughbred retirement efforts financially; however, the time has come to more actively engage in the process of recruiting and retaining industry participants,” Minnesota HBPA President Scott Rake said. “The Minnesota HBPA is excited to join forces with Canterbury Park in an effort to better promote horse ownership throughout the state of Minnesota and to better promote Minnesota horse racing to the industry at large.”

Representatives from Canterbury Park and Minnesota HBPA agree on the importance of incentivizing ownership and developing a greater interest in racehorse ownership. “One of the greatest challenges facing horse racing is the engagement and participation of the next generation of race fans,” Canterbury Park CEO Randy Sampson said “Over 25 years Canterbury Park  has implemented many innovative approaches to engaging the race fan and we are proud of that. Our team has been uniquely successful in drawing live attendance and we believe the next step in our evolution involves teaching and providing resources for these fans to experience the thrill of owning a racehorse and the exciting prospects that thoroughbreds make for equestrians when their racing careers are over.”

Administration Building Renovated!

The Minnesota HBPA and Canterbury Park successfully joined together in the off-season for a project to renovate the Stable Area Administration Building by the start of the 2018 meet.

The cafeteria and lobby area in the interior of the building were cleaned and painted. But the major portion of the project centered on the rec room.

The rec rom was not only painted, but chairs and couches were added as well. Likewise, the old pool table was replaced by two new pool tables and electronic games.

The goal of the renovation was twofold: Provide a clean, comfortable space for the hardworking women and men of the backstretch to relax and provide a facility in which new visitors to Canterbury will feel welcomed.

Record Canterbury Meet Starts May 4th!

A record $15 million in purse money highlights the 2018 70-day racing season at Canterbury Park, which gets underway Kentucky Oaks Day on Friday, May 4th. Also a record this year is the lucrative $2.375 million stakes schedule. http://www.canterburypark.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/2018-Canterbury-Stakes-Schedule.pdf

New Jogger

A new state-of-art jogger will be in place when the racing season begins. The previous jogger had become increasingly popular over the past few years but time took its toll. After numerous repairs to it in 2017, the Minnesota HBPA Board of Directors approved the purchase of a new jogger beginning with the 2018 meet. Likewise, due to inadequate use, excessive costs and repairs, the Board voted to cease having the HBPA operate, oversee and fund the pool.

Administration Building Improvements

The HBPA and Canterbury Park management agreed to make improvements to the administration building in the stable area in time for the 2018 meet. These improvements include painting and new furniture in the rec room as well as general renovation in other parts of the building.

Dental Clinic Back, Better Than Ever

Under the direction of Thoroughbred breeder and owner, Dr. Scott Rake, the Canterbury Park Dental Clinic will be back after a most rewarding year in 2017 of treating scores of backstretch workers’ dental needs. The clinic will be open every week of the meet and staffed with dentists and dental hygienists.

Dental Clinic Opens!

The Dental Clinic in the Stable Area Administration Building opened Wednesday, May 17th after a two-year hiatus. The clinic is under the direction of oral surgeon Dr. Scott Rake, who is also a Minnesota breeder and owner.

Dr. Rake has also brought on board Dr. Mackensie McBeain, who began her dentistry career in oral surgery and has now transitioned into general dentistry. Having Dr. Rake and Dr. McBeain at the dental clinic allows for a wide spectrum of services, from filling cavities to tooth extractions.

But also extremely important is preventive care. To that end, the clinic has hired two dental hygienists. The attainable goal is that anyone on the backstretch needing dental care will receive it.

Congratulations!
